The IAEA Workshop on Severe Accident Management Guidelines (SAMGs) was held in Beijing


The IAEA Workshop on Severe Accident Management Guidelines (SAMGs) was hosted by the Nuclear Safety Centre (NSC) on 13-17 June 2011 in Beijing. It was one of the activities under the technical cooperation project with the IAEA on Enhancing the Capabilities of National Institutions Supporting Nuclear Power Development in China (CPR4032). Seventy-three participants from various Chinese organizations involved in safety analysis of nuclear power plants attended, along with three external experts from the UK, the Republic of Croatia and Slovakia respectively, and an IAEA expert. The workshop was aimed at providing basic, updated information on the severe accident management methodology and how to make/improve the SAMGs as well as discussion on Fukushima accident happened in Japan.
Mr. Kang Yufeng, DDG of NSC, attended the opening ceremony; Mr. Chai Guohan, Chief Engineer of NSC, participated in the workshop and gave a presentation on the issues concerning the Fukushima accident in Japan. The IAEA expert introduced the IAEA Safety Guide on SAMGs; the UK experts gave an introduction of the Westinghouse SAMGs and its recent developments, especially in light of the Fukushima accident; the other two external experts introduced SAMGs methodology and practices in their countries. Participants had hot discussions with the experts and each other during the question-and-answer session after every presentation, and voiced appreciation for the information provided during the workshop.
